Obesity has been considered a risk factor for adverse outcomes following surgery, especially total joint replacement surgeries. These adverse outcomes range from adverse respiratory events during and after surgery to a prolonged recovery due to difficulty in ambulation. There is always a risk of pulmonary embolism that can lead to death due to immobilization following surgery if prolonged.

These risks make it essential that weight has been optimized before surgery, especially total joint replacement surgeries. Weight loss is typically approached with the optimization of diet, exercise, and weight loss medications. An extension of this approach is surgery for weight loss. The least invasive approach would be diet optimization and appropriate exercise. For patients undergoing surgery that involves joints, exercise can have a catch-22 effect where it is difficult to exercise and hence requires the right fitness trainer. Diet optimization relies on eating the right food like keto or reduced fat diet. However, a more scientific approach would be to analyze how many calories the body burns at baseline and then have a nutrition expert help provide a plan to run a caloric deficit that can allow for weight loss over a period.

At Amplify Wellness Medspa, we help analyze your baseline caloric requirement using resting metabolic rate assessment. This is accomplished using our state-of-the-art analyzer from PNOE. The testing is accomplished by wearing a mask that is attached to a sensor to analyze baseline oxygen consumption of the body and carbon dioxide production. Oxygen is the fuel that allows for ATP production that provides energy to the cells and carbon dioxide is the byproduct that is released in this process. When measured, it tells us exactly how many calories the body burns. Once the Caloric requirements are known, and a nutrition expert will provide a consultation that helps you run a caloric deficit to help lose weight which can potentially have a beneficial effect for your upcoming surgery as well as after.

The testing requires 3 hours of fasting except for water as well as avoiding any caffeine or stimulating drinks for 3 hours before the test. Avoid any intense exercise for 24 hours before the test. All the medications can be continued as usual. Following the completion of testing our staff will provide you with a report of your baseline caloric requirement as well as set you up with a PNOE expert for a nutrition consult.
